Poeta estadounidense. Se educó en la Universidad de Columbia y en la Sorbona. Miembro fundador del movimiento Beat a mediados de la década de 1950 en San Francisco, abrió allí la librería City Lights, célebre punto de reunión de los poetas beatniks. La rama editorial de City Lights fue la primera en publicar la poesía beat. La de Ferlinghetti –lúcida, ingeniosa y compuesta para ser leída en voz alta– tuvo una gran acogida en cafés y campus universitarios. Ha publicado, entre otros,
